The desks are dark, the tickers are asleep, and one quiet Sunday headline is still nagging at me. Evening.
You can move $27 billion off a balance sheet. You can't move a substation.
The most telling AI story this weekend wasn't about money. It was about a wire that won't arrive until the 2030s.
This morning I wrote about Meta's Hyperion campus. Bankers parked the debt in a side vehicle. Meta's books stay clean. It's clever work, and Wall Street is very good at it.
Paper is easy to move. Then I read about Loughton.
It's a town in Essex, just outside London. A British AI cloud firm called Nscale planned a data center there. Microsoft was lined up as a tenant. On Sunday, Reuters picked up a Telegraph report that Microsoft has ended the deal.
Microsoft hasn't said why. But the same report said grid officials told Nscale not to expect power until the 2030s. Nscale called it an "unfortunate London-wide grid issue." It says its other Microsoft contracts are fine.
The timing stings. Nscale just filed to list in New York. Its filing shows a contract book most utilities would envy.
That's a huge number. But a contract is a promise. A grid connection is a date. In Britain, that date keeps sliding into the next decade.

Morgan Stanley calls this a $9T opportunity |
|
|
If Morgan Stanley’s right, the flying car industry will grow 185,850% by 2050. In fact, they say it will reach $9 trillion in size, more than twice as valuable as today’s global car market. |
And 14,000+ investors believe Doroni will lead the charge. While competitors chase air fleets and taxis, Doroni’s H1-X aircraft is designed for everyday life. |
It plugs in and charges like an EV, fits in a two-car garage, and requires just 25 hours of training to pilot. And while others are peddling blueprints and renderings, Doroni just unveiled a full-scale showroom prototype in March. |
They have 600+ pre-orders already locked in, $240M+ in potential revenue in place, and the FAA's regulatory path cleared. |
But that's only scratching the surface of why investors are backing Doroni. |
|
|
With commercial deliveries slated for 2028 and $1.4B in annual revenue projected by 2032, the timing of this raise couldn't be better. |
The last time Doroni was open to investors, the opportunity maxed out in less than 100 days. |
And you can claim an early-stage stake in Doroni today. Become a shareholder at $3.30/share. |

So what is a $103 billion backlog worth if the power shows up years late?
Less than the headline says. Britain's grid queue holds about 73 GW of data center demand, per the Uptime Institute. The whole country peaks at 45 GW. Only about 4 GW of new capacity joins each year. That line won't clear in a hurry.
So I think the scarce thing in AI has changed. It isn't chips. It isn't money. It's a date on a utility's calendar. The biggest players have noticed. In Louisiana, Meta isn't waiting for anyone. It's paying for 10 gas plants to feed Hyperion. That's 7.5 GW, more than 30% of the state's grid capacity.
"[Entergy's plan] is a huge risk to existing customers."
Fair worry. Ratepayers could get stuck with plants a tenant no longer needs. But notice the shape of the fight. Nobody is asking whether the money exists. They're asking who owns the power when the lease ends.

|
New Mexico: Oracle sent a force majeure notice on its Project Jupiter campus over power delays. If both sides agree power is the cause, it could defer rent for three years. |
|
|
Britain: Ofgem counts about 117 cases of developers asking to hook data centers to the gas network instead of the grid. |
|
|
Loughton itself: Nscale says it is now exploring other power sources for the site. Same playbook, just a few years late. |
So I read every AI infrastructure pitch differently now. I skip the backlog. I look for megawatts that are switched on today. Contracts are cheap. Live power is the real currency.
Bankers can make debt disappear. Nobody has found a way to make a grid connection appear.
Until someone does, follow the wire, not the backlog.
