Bitcoin Is Not the 90-Pound Weakling Anymore |
Yesterday, Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, suffered the biggest crypto heist on record. |
Blockchain security firms have linked the $6.3 billion cyberattack to North Korean hackers. |
Bitcoin sold off on the news and fell to a six-week low in the $76,000 range. |
If you woke up, saw that headline and felt your stomach drop, I understand. |
Ten years ago, a headline like this could make you wonder whether bitcoin itself was about to break. |
Here’s what the market is telling me today… |
I want you to pull back the camera for a moment. |
Bitcoin used to be the 90-pound weakling on the playground. A major exchange problem could knock the entire market flat. |
That bitcoin is gone. |
The Binance attack is enormous in dollar terms. But the Bitcoin network itself is enormous now, too. |
Glassnode shows roughly $51 billion in gross bitcoin transfer volume moving across the network over the latest 24-hour period. The entire $6.3 billion Binance incident is equal to roughly one-eighth of that amount. |
That gives you some perspective on just how big this market has become. It’s a very different bitcoin from the one I entered a decade ago. |
We’ve seen crypto crises before. The interesting part is how bitcoin reacted to them. |
When Mt. Gox halted withdrawals in February 2014, bitcoin fell about 7.7% that day and 10.9% by the following day. |
When FTX halted withdrawals in November 2022, bitcoin fell about 9.9% that day. By the following day, the loss had deepened to roughly 22.9%. |
Then came the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025. Bitcoin fell about 2.2% that day. By the following day, it was down only about 1.8% from its pre-hack level. |
Now compare that with Binance. As of late Friday afternoon, bitcoin was down roughly 4.6% from its pre-hack level after the largest crypto theft on record. |
That tells me bitcoin has matured. |
The market still reacts to bad news. Of course it does. But bitcoin has become much harder to knock down with one punch. |
This Is Not Another FTX |
There’s another reason I don’t want you to treat Binance like FTX. |
FTX was different. |
As the story unfolded, people realized the exchange didn’t have the money it was supposed to have. Customer funds were missing. Withdrawals stopped. Then the fear spread beyond FTX because nobody knew who else was exposed or where the next problem might show up. |
That’s when panic really took over. |
Based on what we know right now, Binance looks very different. |
Binance did pause withdrawals while it secured its systems and says it expects to resume them within 48 hours. That pause was a security precaution. Based on what Binance has disclosed so far, this isn’t the kind of missing-customer-funds problem we saw at FTX. |
That doesn’t mean the hack is harmless. It was a serious security failure, and investigators are still working through exactly what happened. |
But if Binance can cover the losses and customers remain whole, this is a very different problem from an exchange running out of money. |
Now I’m Watching $74,000 |
Before this hack, bitcoin was set up to rally. |
Then this hit the market and gave sellers exactly the kind of headline they needed. So now I want to see what they can actually do with it. |
The level I’m watching is around $74,000. |
If bitcoin can absorb the biggest crypto hack in history and hold that level, it’d be one of the most bullish signals I’ve ever seen in this asset class. |
Think about what that would mean. |
Anyone can look strong when the headlines are good. I pay much closer attention when an asset gets punched in the mouth and refuses to stay down. |
That would tell me buyers are willing to step in even with fear all over the headlines. And it would tell me bitcoin has reached a level of maturity we simply did not have during Mt. Gox or FTX failures. |
If $74,000 fails, we reassess. I’m not going to pretend one level makes us invincible. |
But as long as bitcoin keeps absorbing the selling, I don’t want you confusing a scary headline with a broken long-term thesis. |
We’ve Been Here Before |
This asset survived Mt. Gox, when the exchange failed and bitcoin was down nearly 11% by the next day. |
This asset survived FTX, when the exchange failed and bitcoin was down nearly 23% by the following day. |
This asset survived Bybit, when the exchange stayed solvent, covered users, and bitcoin absorbed the initial hit much faster. |
None of them killed bitcoin. |
Based on what we know today, Binance looks much closer to the Bybit side of that divide than the Mt. Gox or FTX side. |
Binance says it has the resources to cover the losses, and billions of dollars in affected assets have already been frozen. |
What has changed is bitcoin’s resilience. This market can take a punch today that would have flattened it years ago. |
That is the proof bitcoin has grown up: bad things still happen, but they don’t knock bitcoin the way they used to. |

P.S. What happened at Binance is a good example of why I’m holding a special event this Wednesday, November 4, at 8 p.m. ET. |
The long-term bitcoin story remains incredibly strong. But when something unexpected hits this market, prices can move very fast. |
I’ve made an important decision about how I want us to navigate those moments going forward. I’ll explain what I’m changing, why I’m doing it, and what it means for your money on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. You can reserve your seat here. |
