It’s the machine at the other end — and three factories are sold out to 2031.

The last trade printed, the floor went dark, and I kept circling one question nobody wanted to answer at the close. Evening.
Everyone's racing for a power connection. Almost no one can get the machine that feeds it.
The grid's real bottleneck isn't permits or wires. It's a turbine you can't buy until 2031.
This morning's story was a data center that pulled a city's worth of power and broke no rules doing it. Tonight, the twist. Even that center has to stand in a line it can't skip.
The slow part isn't the permit. It's the hardware. Transformers. Switchgear. And above all, the big gas turbines that actually make the power.
Three companies build the heavy-duty turbines that matter: GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, and Mitsubishi. All three are sold out past 2030.
Need a big transformer? The wait went from months to as long as four years. A new factory to build them takes three to five.
2031
The year GE Vernova's next open turbine slots now reach — the big three makers are booked solid past 2030. — Latitude Media, Oct 2026
GE Vernova reported yesterday. Orders up 96%. Its backlog is set to cross $200 billion. The machine maker just became the hottest seat at the table.

So the money isn't really buying power. It's buying a place in line.
A turbine slot is now an asset. Some buyers pay just to hold one, years before a wire gets pulled.
Electrical gear is under 10% of a data center's cost. It has become 100% of the holdup. The compute is ready. The steel to power it is not.
"Mostly sold out through '30."
That's why hyperscalers now finance turbines they will never run. The point isn't owning the machine. It's holding the slot. And the slot is the moat.
|
|
Not just AI: factories, EVs, and renewables are fighting for the exact same transformers and turbines. |
|
|
Follow the slot: whoever holds factory capacity holds the schedule — and the pricing power. |
The permit fight gets the headlines. The factory slot decides who actually gets built.
The grid won't go to whoever wants power most. It'll go to whoever booked the factory first.
Watch the order books, not the press releases.
