Sponsored     Can the same $5,000 gift have different tax treatment depending on how it reaches a charity? For an IRA owner, the transfer route matters. A qualified charitable distribution, or QCD, generally goes directly from the IRA trustee to an eligible organization. The owner must be at least 70½ when the distribution occurs. Taking an ordinary withdrawal into a personal account and then making a donation does not create the same transaction. The charitable intention may be identical, but the reporting rules follow what actually happened. The transfer route belongs in the plan, alongside the amount the donor intends to give and the organization intended to receive it. President George W. Bush signed the Pension Protection Act on August 17, 2006, creating the original IRA charitable rollover provision. That gave eligible older IRA owners a direct route for charitable distributions outside ordinary taxable income. Today's IRS instructions retain the direct-transfer requirement and allow qualifying amounts to count toward a required minimum distribution, the annual withdrawal some retirement accounts require. The age test for a QCD remains 70½, so it needs its own check. Meeting a required-withdrawal obligation and qualifying a charitable transfer are related questions, but one answer does not settle the other. The account type and recipient organization also have to meet the applicable rules. For the hypothetical $5,000 transfer, the practical starting point is the IRA custodian's charitable-distribution procedure and the charity's eligibility. A qualifying amount excluded from income cannot also become an itemized charitable deduction. The donor still needs the charity's acknowledgment, and deductible IRA contributions made after age 70½ can reduce the amount eligible for exclusion. Annual limits and other conditions apply as well. Those details are worth taking to a tax preparer before the paperwork is finalized. A donation can be generous and still need a correction in how it is recorded. The useful objective is an account record, a charity acknowledgment, and a tax return that describe the same transfer.     Sponsored Following Institutional Trades Through A Different Class Of Securities Private trading venues handle transactions away from public exchanges.
