THIS EVENING - HOST CPU / PLATFORM |
AMD's next host CPU is 256 cores and 600 watts. Boards have to change. |
GPU allocation gets the headlines. The host CPU that feeds those GPUs just jumped to a 600-watt envelope, and that forces a full board redesign. |
AMD's newsroom says sixth-generation EPYC 9006 "Venice" processors are in production, with major OEM platforms on track and cloud providers set to begin deploying later this year. The flagship EPYC 9996 configuration in AMD materials runs 256 cores and 512 threads, sixteen DDR5 memory channels, PCIe Gen6 and CXL 3.1, at a Default CPU Power of 600 watts. That is a new SP7 platform. Prior EPYC sockets do not take the upgrade in place. |
Skip the core-count brochure. Watch which OEM and cloud host platforms clear the power regulation, cooling, and memory redesign before denser GPU attach can ship, and which AI programs still wait on qualified host boards. |

Who benefits: server OEMs and power/cooling suppliers already designing for 500–600W host envelopes on SP7. Who is exposed: operators counting on drop-in host upgrades to feed denser GPU racks. What could prove this wrong? Cloud deploys slip past 2026, or hyperscalers keep prior platforms longer than AMD's production claim implies. Watch OEM SP7 availability and the first cloud instance SKUs. |

THE LONG GAME |
The AI rack trade is not only GPU tons. Host CPU power and memory channels now gate how dense the next GPU generation can sit. |

$39 Trillion in Debt. One Move Left. |
America can't tax its way out and can't cut its way out. That leaves growing its way out - and Washington is betting on one technology to do it. |
