THIS EVENING - OPTICAL ENGINES |
Tower ships laser-on-PIC engines for AI optics |
NewPhotonics + Tower: 800G-1.6T engines leave the lab for volume. |
This morning was inference systems sold as racks. Tonight is the optical engine layer that keeps those racks from choking on copper. |
Tower Semiconductor and NewPhotonics say they have begun high-volume shipments of laser-integrated photonic engines for scale-out and scale-up AI interconnect. NPG102 covers 800G and 1.6T at 200G per lane with heterogeneously integrated lasers. A CPX-MSA NPO chipset (NPC505) is aimed at 6.4T volume in the first half of 2027. They plan to show product at ECOC in Malaga next week. |
Yesterday's GF story was SiGe wafer capacity behind optical PHYs. This is different: the PIC engine itself, lasers on the chip, shipping to OEM and data-center customers now. Fudzilla and the companies' GlobeNewswire release are the primary paper trail. |
The "just buy Nvidia" crowd will shrug. The desks that price interconnect power will not. When clusters move to NPO and LRO architectures, the scarce unit is whether laser-integrated engines exist at volume - not whether another GPU brochure landed. |

Engines, not foundry slides |
Tower's PH18DA platform plus NewPhotonics design is a manufacturing claim: laser-integrated PICs leaving the lab. Volume language matters more than a roadmap chart. |

NPO power math is the foil |
Huawei's Atlas 960E pitch this week - 5,500 Hi-ONE engines replacing tens of thousands of 800G modules - is the China-path color. The Western volume story tonight is Tower and NewPhotonics shipping the engines that make that math real on open platforms. |

THE LONG GAME |
Interconnect is becoming a first-order cost line. The desks that still treat optics as a commodity will misprice the companies that can put lasers on PICs at volume while everyone else argues about GPU generations. |
