The AI Trade Everyone Owns Just BLEW UP.The two names that carried energy yesterday were sold today. Neither one is in the fund with 'Energy' on the label.
The AI trade shot its own power names today. Vistra closed down more than 8%. The Nasdaq ripped 2.6% the same afternoon. Yesterday Vistra was the story inside energy, up 5.2% while the oil names bled. Today the AI trade had a monster session and the stocks that sell it electricity got sold into the rip. The most obvious trade in the AI boom just blew up in broad daylight. Crude cracked another 5% this morning, one day after a called-off strike on Iran. Before the bell, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent went on TV and put a date on the rest of it. "There is a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow to open the strait," he said. He means the Strait of Hormuz, the tanker chokepoint Iran shut in March. Nothing is signed. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was more careful. "There's been progress made in those talks, but not finality yet." Hope was enough. Two sessions pointing the same way, and 10% off the barrel. Same label both days. Opposite money underneath it.
The "Energy" Fund Owns 21 Names. Every One Is a Barrel.The desk reads it this way. Energy stopped being one trade. It is two now, and they answer to different bosses. One is the barrel. The other is the electron: the power that runs the data centers, and the gas and reactors behind it. XLE wears the label. It holds 21 positions. Oil, gas, fuel, and the equipment that pulls it out of the ground. Not one utility. Exxon and Chevron alone are 36% of it. Vistra and Constellation, the two names that carried energy yesterday, are top-10 holdings of XLU. The utility fund. Not the energy fund. So money that bought XLE for the AI power theme bought Exxon and Chevron. A fund's name is marketing. What is under the hood is the trade. The electron side has not been paying. Constellation is down more than 20% this year while XLE is up more than 30%. Vistra getting sold on a day like this is the market arguing over who collects the buildout's electricity bill. The desk's call is that the power names collect it. The AI energy trade is on and it runs for years. It is not on inside a fund that owns 21 barrels. Owning the right plays is the whole job. The strait has been shut since March, and every headline since has sent XLE lurching one way and back. That lurch is what the Trading Club works every week with students. Selling put spreads into the knee-jerk, both sides of it. The knee-jerk repeats because the fund keeps trading the barrel. The money keeps moving to the other half of energy, the nuclear and independent power names. Oil is one part of this trade. AI is the other.
