⏳ Two Ex-Dates, One Quiet Week |
Prudential goes ex on Tuesday, NextEra on Friday. Neither one is news, and that is rather the point. |

Two names on the watchlist go ex-dividend this coming week, and if you own either one it is worth knowing what that actually means, because the mechanics confuse people every single time. |
When a stock goes ex-dividend, the price typically opens lower by roughly the amount of the payment. That is not the market deciding the company is worth less. It is the payment leaving the company and heading toward you, and the share price adjusting to reflect that the next buyer will not receive it. If you owned Prudential going into Tuesday, you get the $1.40 on September 10, and the quote you see Tuesday morning has that dollar-forty accounted for. Nothing has been lost. It has moved from one column to another. |
The reason I keep coming back to this is that the two dates people care about are the ones nobody prints on a chart. The ex-date decides whether you receive it. The payable date decides when. Everything in between is just the price doing bookkeeping in public. |

Declared. Realty Income declared its next monthly payment on August 18 — 27.1 cents a share, the same amount it declared in July and in June, payable September 15 to holders of record August 31. Prudential declared $1.40 on August 11, unchanged from May. Emerson declared 55.5 cents on August 4, also unchanged. Quiet on the raise front this fortnight, and quiet is the ordinary state. |

• Prudential Financial — Tuesday, August 25. $1.40 a share, declared August 11, payable September 10.
• NextEra Energy — Friday, August 28. 62.32 cents a share, declared July 30, payable September 15.
• Just past the edge of the week: Realty Income goes ex on Monday, August 31. |
Yield check. Schwab US Dividend Equity closed at $34.90 on Thursday, down 0.74% on the session, carrying a forward yield of 3.00%. Vanguard High Dividend Yield closed at $164.11, down 0.81%. Against those two, Duke Energy’s forward yield is 3.54% and Smucker’s is 3.64%. |
I usually put the ten-year Treasury alongside those for comparison. This week I do not have a completed-session figure for it that I can stand behind, so I have left it out rather than print one I have not checked. It will be back next time. |

Duke Energy (DUK). |
100 consecutive years of quarterly dividend payments. |
The quarterly amount is now $1.085, raised from $1.065. That raise was declared on July 14, first went ex on August 14, and is payable September 16. The forward annual rate is $4.34 a share, a yield of 3.54% at Thursday’s close. The shares have traded between $113.90 and $134.49 over the past year, on a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of about 15 and diluted earnings of $6.31 a share. |
The utility carries a great deal of debt, which is normal for the business and worth knowing anyway: roughly $91 billion against $12.3 billion of operating cash flow over the past twelve months. The payment has never depended on the share price being exciting. |
A regulated utility with a century-long payment habit and a two-cent raise. That is a description of what the record shows, not a recommendation. |
