On Monday morning, before anyone has an opinion about the market, Procter & Gamble sends $1.0885 a share to everyone who owned the stock on July 24. The board declared that amount on July 14. It was fixed then. Nothing that happens between now and Monday changes it. |
That is the part of investing that does not show up on a screen. The company’s cash has landed in February, May, August and November for as long as this record runs, on a payable date set weeks in advance, which is simply the day the money reaches the account. The price moves and gets reported every day in between. |
Into Thursday’s close, PG traded at $144.26, nearer the bottom of its 52-week range of $137.62 to $167.25 than the top. Monday’s payment is unaffected by that. |

For a long-term holder the useful takeaway is a scheduling one, not a trading one. The money arriving Monday was decided in July, which means this week’s headlines cannot reach it. The reinvestment setting nobody checks |
Most brokerages default one way or the other, position by position, and plenty of holders have never looked at which. Ted Benna, who designed the first 401(k) plan in 1980, built automatic reinvestment into the idea from the start, so the money went back to work without anyone deciding again each quarter. Outside a retirement account that same default may or may not suit you, depending on whether you are still adding or already drawing down. |
There is no universal right answer. At the current forward rate of $4.354 a share, a hundred shares throws off about $435 a year, and the only question is where it lands. A holder living on the income needs the cash. A holder still building may prefer the shares. What matters is that it be a setting, not an accident. |
P&G is a fair example of what a long payment record looks like, wrinkles included. In April 2009, in the middle of the financial crisis, it raised the quarterly payment from 40 cents to 44 cents, and it has raised it every April since. |
