How a CEO Turned an AI Blowout Into a CrashCisco spiked on the best report in its history, then collapsed while the CEO was still talking. We think it's a sell.
Cisco got destroyed today. Shares closed deep in the red, down 8%, the morning after the best quarter and the best year Cisco has ever reported. The night before was even uglier. When the report hit just after the close, shares spiked as much as 8% in after hours. The print was that good. $9.3 billion in AI orders this year, 4.5 times last year's total, and a full-year guide above what Wall Street wanted. Then the call started at 4:30 and it all came apart. The stock crashed back through the closing price while the CEO was talking and kept falling, down 10% before he was done speaking. An 18-point round trip in under 90 minutes. For the bulls, it feels like deja vu. Back in February, memory costs were squeezing the margin, the street called the guide mediocre, and the stock dropped 12%, its worst day since 2022. It took six months for the market to buy all of that back, and by Wednesday's close the stock was within 5% of its record high. This time there wasn't even a mediocre guide to blame. The report was a flat-out blowout. It got sold anyway. Great Quarter, Great Guidance, No ClaritySo what did the CEO say that turned an 8% spike into a rout? He told the room the next phase of enterprise AI won't be defined by cloud migration alone. Companies are going to bring more AI infrastructure into their own data centers. That's not what Wall Street thinks. Every model the street has built on Cisco assumes the old story, and change the story, the models break with it. And the stock was sitting just off record highs. The last thing anybody wants to hear up there is "change." Investors want to hear the plan they bought is on track. What they got was a great quarter, great guidance, and no clarity on the road ahead. A confused investor sells first and asks questions later. Then there's the cost problem. Memory, the scarce chips inside the same AI gear Cisco sells, is squeezing Cisco's margin, and the new guide says that squeeze runs through next year. Micron sells that memory, and Micron got paid the same session Cisco got charged for buying it. So the bulls woke up to a broken story and a stock down 8% on results that should have sent it higher. That's twice this year Cisco has been sold on its own record numbers, after February's 12%. We think it's a sell. The story just got harder to model, the margin runs against Cisco for a year, and there are better AI trades working right now. What to Watch
