If you keep a household income list, McDonald's next declared payment offers a useful entry to examine. The company declared $1.86 per share on July 23, payable September 16. A hypothetical holding of 100 shares would receive $186 before any taxes, assuming eligibility and no change to the declaration. At the same quarterly rate, those shares would generate $744 over four payments. Your own share count supplies the first part of the calculation. The more revealing part comes when you divide that expected income by the annual dividends from the entire portfolio, using consistent assumptions for each holding in the account. |
McDonald's second-quarter release reported global comparable sales growth of 1.3%, including 0.8% in the United States. Comparable sales measure the performance of established restaurants. Chairman and CEO Chris Kempczinski discussed improving execution in the U.S. business. Those are company-specific facts worth following even for a familiar dividend payer. A restaurant business still has customers to serve and spending choices to make. Its payout record can be long while its operating results vary. Reading the income column beside the share count keeps the business visible after the payment has become a comfortable part of the household routine. |
Suppose those hypothetical 100 shares supply $744 of an illustrative $6,000 annual dividend budget. They account for 12.4% of that income, regardless of how large the position looks in the portfolio's market-value column. Both amounts are examples, not a suggested allocation or a forecast of payments. A second holding can be a similar size in dollars and contribute a different share of income. Writing down both shares helps you see where the household plan depends on a particular company. You might find the concentration acceptable.
