A thermal outage, not an HVAC ticket |
Once the rack is liquid, the cooling plant is on the critical power path. |
| |
| |
⚡ THE SETUP |
Vertiv Cooling Innovation Day 2026. Kevin Lemke, senior global product manager for single phase liquid cooling, with DCD's Stephen Worn. AI racks at 100-plus kilowatts, with conversations toward 1 megawatt per rack.
Same conversation. Liquid today typically covers about 70 to 80 percent of the cooling load, with 20 to 30 percent still on air. The trend is toward a 100 percent liquid topology: chips, power supplies, bus bars. Fluid velocity in stainless pipe moving from about 3 meters a second toward about 6 as density grows.
Same conversation, load-bearing. Liquid cooling cannot have it go down for liquid-cooled servers. Operators must ask: single power feed or two. Transfer switch. On UPS. Blast radius, how many racks a piping or CDU failure takes out.

Once the rack is liquid-cooled, the cooling plant is on the critical power path. |
A single feed, a missing transfer switch, or a CDU left off the UPS is now a thermal outage. Not an HVAC inconvenience. |
That is Kevin Lemke's argument, not mine. |
Vertiv's senior global product manager for single phase liquid cooling sat at Cooling Innovation Day 2026 with DCD's Stephen Worn. The density number is setup only. AI racks at 100-plus kilowatts, with conversations toward 1 megawatt per rack. |
Liquid today typically covers about 70 to 80 percent of the cooling load. Twenty to 30 percent still on air. The trend is toward a 100 percent liquid topology: chips, power supplies, bus bars. |
Fluid velocity in stainless pipe is moving from about 3 meters a second toward about 6 as density grows. The pipe and the plant have to be sized for that flow. |
The load-bearing line is reliability. Liquid cooling cannot have it go down for liquid-cooled servers. |
Operators have to ask the power questions. Single power feed or two. Transfer switch. On UPS. Blast radius, how many racks a piping or CDU failure takes out. |
Design levers Lemke named: leak detection, isolation valves, smaller loops. Two CDUs on a loop instead of ten. |
CDU rating points used to be wild west. Four degrees of approach versus 8 to 10 making the same box look like 800 kilowatts or 2 megawatts. Industry standards now force comparable rating points. |
Schneider, Eaton, nVent sit in the competitive set. Not a second hero. The product is cooling as critical power. |
This physics does not wait on nVent's factory calendar. The Blaine slot is a different letter. |
A loop of ten CDUs shares one blast radius. A loop of two does not. That is the design lever, not another cold plate. |
The 3 meter and 6 meter pair is the pipe. If velocity doubles, the plant has to be sized for the flow, and the power path has to stay up while it does. |

🔎 THE SECOND DERIVATIVE |
Somebody else has to keep the cooling plant on the power path. The transfer switch and the UPS sit under the liquid rack. The feed, not the brochure. That is the tap I want. |

⚖️ THE COUNTER |
The foil is treating liquid cooling as HVAC, or sitting with a second factory lease as if it answers the feed question. A thermal outage does not care which plant cut the slot. |
