The manufacturing slot, not the GPU queue |
Iris is dated for mass production this month. |
| |
| |
⚡ THE SETUP |
Reuters, July 9, internal Meta memo. Meta plans to start manufacturing its Iris AI chip in September. Iris sits in the Meta Training and Inference Accelerator, or MTIA, four-generation project. Testing took six weeks. The memo found no major issues.
Same memo. Compute path of about 7 gigawatts in 2026, doubling to about 14 gigawatts in 2027. 2026 AI infrastructure spend up to about $145 billion. Iris is meant to supplement GPUs Meta still buys from NVIDIA and AMD. Frontier training still sits on that merchant book.
The memo also locked supply. Samsung for memory. Sandisk for flash. Sumitomo Electric for fiber. A design partner and a foundry sit in the stack as color. The scarce layer is the manufacturing slot this month.
Apple, Google and Tesla Were Not Obvious Either They are household names now, but the original Magnificent Seven earned that over years rather than arriving with it. Analysts believe the next generation is forming, and seven companies currently fit the same pattern. Free report. Not investment advice. All investing involves risk of loss and past performance does not guarantee future results. (From MarketBeat)

US markets are closed for Labor Day. |
The foundry calendar is not. |
Meta did not wait for another GPU allocation to print inference. |
Iris, the custom inference die inside the MTIA family, is dated for mass production this month. Reuters had the memo on July 9. WithO2 put the same September production date on the chip. Awesome Agents did too. That is the slot. Not another brochure about merchant GPUs. |
Reuters said testing took six weeks and found no major issues. Six clean weeks is not a fleet in the rack. It is the start of a manufacturing slot. |
The path in the memo is the number that reframes. About 7 gigawatts of compute in 2026. About 14 gigawatts in 2027. Meta does not have to sit solely on GPU allocation to walk that path. Frontier training still buys NVIDIA and AMD. Ranking, recommendation, and a lot of inference can move onto silicon Meta designed for its own Facebook and Instagram load. |
That is one layer below the GPU headline. What you would actually underwrite is whether September production is real, and whether memory, flash, and fiber arrive with the die. |
A design partner helped cut the chip. A foundry is supposed to make it. |
The constraint is whether this September's manufacturing slot actually opens, and whether 7 gigawatts can become 14 without waiting solely on someone else's GPU queue. |
I want the slot, not the allocation story. |

🔎 THE SECOND DERIVATIVE |
Somebody else has to cut the memory, the flash, and the fiber before Iris can fill a rack. Samsung on memory. Sandisk on flash. Sumitomo Electric on fiber. The die sits on that kit. The bill of materials under the slot, not another GPU day. |

⚖️ THE COUNTER |
The foil is treating a September production date as already-on-the-floor inference, or sitting with custom silicon as if it replaced NVIDIA and AMD on frontier training. The memo says supplement. Six weeks of testing is not a gigawatt print. Fourteen gigawatts is a 2027 path. Integration is still a job. |

👀 WHAT TO WATCH |
Watch whether Iris actually enters mass production this month. Watch whether the 7-to-14 gigawatt path still needs a merchant GPU print for training. Labor Day closed the US tape. It did not move the foundry date. |
