🎯 BONUS: Follow the munitions, not the oil. 🛢️Everyone read this week as an oil story. The steadier money was in the companies that reload the launchers. The consensus read this week as oil, and both sides agreed on it. The mainstream desks talked Brent at $100 and the energy majors. The populist take talked the pump. Fine. That's the obvious flow, and obvious flows are already priced. The quieter one this week ran through Raytheon, Lockheed, and General Dynamics, the firms that restock every missile the U.S. fires over the Gulf. Nine straight nights of strikes is a burn rate. Interceptors, standoff munitions, the guided rounds that don't come back. Every one gets replaced on a multi-year procurement contract signed months before the launch. On a defense-prime income statement, an open-ended campaign isn't a headline. It's a recurring revenue line with a government counterparty that always pays. Oil can round-trip in a week, up on a headline and back down on a ceasefire rumor. A signed replenishment contract does not round-trip. It sits in the backlog, gets recognized quarter after quarter, and doesn't care whether the shooting stops next month or next year. That is a far steadier stream than a barrel of crude, and far fewer people are watching it. So notice who isn't complaining. No defense chief executive called for de-escalation this week. No appropriator whose district builds the hardware did either. The oil price earns Sunday-show outrage because outrage is cheap and the villain is familiar. The replenishment contracts get signed with no debate, because nobody built a career objecting to a factory in their own state. Watch the other hand.
Oil is the price you see. The munitions contract is the one that renews whether or not anyone is watching.
The populist consensus wants this to be about oil companies, because that's the fight everyone already signed up for. But the buried actor is the defense-industrial base and the members of Congress whose disclosures show them long the primes. It is the same machine that hollowed out Youngstown and called it trade policy, now funding a campaign that props these tickers up. The jobs left. The contracts stayed. A worker in Lordstown watched a plant close and a reshoring promise die, then watched his tax dollars route to a missile plant three states over that never once feared a layoff. The defense budget is the one line in Washington that survives every administration, every recession, every promise to cut spending. It doesn't survive by accident. It survives because the right districts build the right hardware. The contract nobody votes onAn authorization vote would put the campaign on the record and force a debate on the cost. The reload moves slow, in appropriations and backlog notes almost nobody reads, and slow is exactly how the biggest transfers stay invisible.
