The market finally found the cost of AI.
The Dow fell 541 points, or 1%. The S&P 500 lost 1.4%. The Nasdaq dropped 2.3%.
Two stories hit together.
Alphabet (GOOGL) fell 6% after lifting 2026 capital spending guidance to $195 billion to $205 billion. Investors accepted stronger cloud demand. They questioned the growing bill.
Tesla (TSLA) plunged 14%.
Revenue rose 26% to a record $28.2 billion, but free cash flow turned negative for the first time in more than two years. Investors focused on rising spending for robotaxis, AI, and automation.
Oil made everything worse.
Brent surged above $100 while the 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 4.7%, its highest level since January 2025.
The VIX rose to 19.64.
After the close, Intel (INTC) changed the conversation.
Revenue climbed 25% to $16.1 billion, adjusted earnings reached $0.42 per share, and data center revenue jumped 59% as AI demand accelerated.

The United States completed its twelfth straight night of strikes on Iran.
The Houthis said they attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia confirmed one tanker caught fire, though all crew were safe.
President Trump warned that every future Houthi attack would bring major military punishment against both the Houthis and Iran.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iran remains unwilling to negotiate.
The market is now pricing disruption across both Hormuz and the Red Sea.
Energy Signal
The market is no longer trading one shipping route. It is pricing two energy chokepoints at the same time.
Oil pushed central banks back toward inflation.
The 10-year Treasury yield reached 4.699%. The 2-year climbed above 4.35%.
Markets now price about an 81% chance of a September Fed hike.
Jobless claims fell to 187,000, well below expectations of 212,000, reinforcing the view that the labor market remains strong.
Europe faces the same problem.
The European Central Bank held rates at 2.25%, but President Christine Lagarde warned higher energy prices could keep inflation above target into 2027.
Markets are already pricing a possible September ECB hike.
