The Agency granted major permits to the Dewey-Burdock mine in South Dakota. The mine’s developer, Powertech, has been advancing the project for 12 years. ➤ Cuba's miners are ready to supply the U.S. tech boom. In a Bloomberg interview, the CEO of Sherritt International called for Joe Biden to relax sanctions tightened under the Trump administration. Sherritt mines key battery metals nickel and cobalt in Cuba, but sends the metal to Canada for processing. ➤ Platinum metal faced a massive supply shortage. Worldwide demand for the investment and automotive metal will be 1.2 million ounces higher than mine production in 2020, said the World Platinum Investment Council. The big problem is mine shutdowns in South Africa, which produces over 70% of the world’s platinum. ➤ A new hub for space mining is in Luxembourg. The tiny European nation announced plans to create the “European Space Resources Innovation Centre.” Luxembourg will partner with the European Space Agency to develop expertise in the technical, business, and economic aspects of space mines. ➤ A fleet of Aussie coal ships is surrounding China. As reported by Bloomberg, more than 50 vessels have been anchored for a month around Chinese ports. China prohibited the boats from unloading coal because of sanctions against Australia.
