LEARN MORE. | | | "It doesn't matter who votes, it matters who COUNTS the votes." -- Joseph Stalin
"We underestimate the extent to which we have been marinated in Marxist philosophy in our schools and society." -- Senator Mike Lee
In 1958, at the height of the Communist scare, my uncle, W. Cleon Skousen, wrote a bestselling book called "The Naked Communist."
It sold nearly 2 million copies. It was reprinted by popular demand in 2017.
Movie producer Cecil B. DeMille suggested the title "The Naked Communist" because Cleon's book "stripped the communists of all pretense and propaganda."
The Communist Takeover of Venezuela
Suddenly people are talking about "The Naked Communist" following the sham re-election of Marxist/Communist Nicolás Maduro, the president of Venezuela.
According to exit polls, the opposition had a two-to-one victory, even without the voting of nearly eight million Venezuelan exiles. The public was finally fed up with the economic collapse of the once-richest country in Latin America.
Alas, six hours later Maduro was declared the winner with 51% of the vote. Riots broke out, and the government thugs arrested leaders of the opposition.
No doubt Maduro and other communist leaders were taught well from Joseph Stalin, who said, "Those who vote decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything."
Short of a military coup, Maduro will do everything in his power to stay in office. He wisely took over the military in Venezuela years ago.
Sleep Well, Comrades
After the election, the New York Times reported, "Mr. Maduro said he was relaxed about the fallout from the election and the claims of fraud and had 'slept like a baby' on Sunday night."
Maduro's comment reminds me of another statement by Joseph Stalin: "To choose one's victim, to prepare one's plans minutely, to stake an implacable vengeance and then go to bed... there is nothing sweeter in the world." (quoted in "The Naked Communist," p. 229)
There Is Hope in Argentina
But let us not be entirely pessimistic. Libertarian and Austrian economist Javier Milei has been elected president of Argentina and is doing everything in his power to push back the devastating policies of the Peronistas of wasteful government spending and runaway inflation. He has had some success in returning the glory days of Argentina by cutting inflation and encouraging foreign investment to come back.
If he succeeds, it could encourage the rest of Latin America to throw off the failures of central planning and socialism. In the past two weeks, Cleon Skousen and "The Naked Communist" were discussed on the Tucker Carlson Show.
Ben Carson, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, told Tucker and his audience about Cleon's list of "Communism's 45 Goals" published in 1963, and how many of them have already been achieved.
The list includes official recognition of Red China… gain control of the teachers unions… break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio and TV… discredit American culture and traditional family values… eliminate prayer in the schools… discredit American founding fathers...
It even includes "taking over one of the two major political parties."
Senator Mike Lee told Tucker that he had re-read "The Naked Communist" in preparation for a talk he gave in Utah on the new book, "There Were Giants in the Land: Episodes in the Life of W. Cleon Skousen," which my wife Jo Ann and I compiled and edited.
He worried that Marxist ideology has infiltrated our culture -- our schools, churches, media, government and even corporate headquarters.
Is Kamala Harris a Marxist?
Vice President Kamala Harris has definitely been influenced by Marxist ideology. Her father was a Marxist economist from Jamaica who taught at Stanford University. She doesn't just favor equal opportunity for the less fortunate but "equal outcomes" -- true "equity" as she calls it -- through subsidies and welfare to the poor and confiscatory taxes on the rich. Her election in November would advance the big government, anti-capitalist policies of the Biden-Harris administration.
New Memoirs Based on Private Diaries
Senator Lee said that he has just finished reading the Giants book and loved it. "Cleon Skousen was truly a giant -- one who inspired me in so many ways. I encourage everyone to read the story of this great man, which will inspire you to join the cause of liberty."
What's the Giants book all about? After three years of hard work by my wife Jo Ann and I, his personal story can be told for the first time, in his own words, revealing never-before-published details about his personal and family life, his six careers and his influence with top government and religious leaders. The book includes over 190 rare photographs and newspaper clippings.
Over his 70-year career as an FBI agent, chief of police in Salt Lake City, BYU professor, author of the "Thousand Year" books, leader in the anti-communist movement and defender of the Constitution, Dr. Cleon Skousen gave over 10,000 speeches and wrote several bestselling books that have sold millions: "The Naked Communist"… "The Naked Capitalist"… "The 5,000 Year Leap"… "The Making of America"… and "The Thousand Years" books about the Bible (which still sell today, because they bring the Bible to life like no other book).
Labeled the "Constitutional guru" of the conservative movement by the New York Times, Cleon Skousen constantly defended our Constitutional rights and warned America about the dangers of communism, which he regarded as "the greatest threat to liberty on the earth today."
Our book has been endorsed by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Heritage Foundation's founder Ed Feulner, Senator Orrin Hatch, conservative marketing genius Richard Viguerie, former congressman Bob McEwen, Leadership Institute founder Morton Blackwell and many others. He was long-time friends with former congressman Ron Paul.
Radio host Glenn Beck wrote, "When I die, there are two people I want to meet, and one of them is Cleon Skousen. Have you ever read a book that literally changed the course of your thinking and your life? God bless Cleon Skousen for his untiring efforts to bring Constitutional principles back to this promised land." | | Where are the record-setting stocks going? When our publisher tried to print a low-cost edition of the book in China, the Chinese government intervened and prohibited his book from being published in China.
The printer wrote us, "I was informed that China won't allow it to be printed in any mainland printer due to its contents, what they referred to as 'sensitive material.'"
I guess they took offense to such statements as "no patriotic American can be either a communist or a supporter of communism" (p. 155) and "Mao's 'butcher' was believed to have supervised the slaughter of some thirty-five million Chinese" (p. 320).
Our publisher chose to print it in "free" South Korea.
Highlights:

Mark Skousen Doti-Spogli Endowed Chair of Free Enterprise, Chapman University Wikipedia Newsletter and trading services Personal website FreedomFest | | The Pros and Cons of Wearing Masks By Mark Skousen Editor, Forecasts & Strategies
In a recent study, over 4,500 random participants were tested on the benefits of wearing surgical masks in public places over a two-week period, and compared to those who wore no masks. They concluded that wearing surgical masks reduced respiratory symptoms and infections by 30%.
You can see the study here.
There's only one problem. These mask studies never address the costs associated with wearing masks. They focus solely on the benefits. They ignore the negatives, such as:
--the ill effects of not breathing in fresh air (sometimes for 8 hours a day!),
--the facial skin rashes, flair up of acne and other serious irritations due to prolonged wearing of masks,
--the loss of language skills (children especially lose ability to communicate properly),
--the loss of social relations (you can't see what a person looks like, or their expressions -- this is especially important when meeting with your doctor, people at work, friends and loved ones, etc.),
--the billions of dollars spent to produce surgical masks (at least $10 each).
And finally, the government's and businesses' "busybody" tendency to mandate constantly the wearing of masks, which denies people's basic freedom. I was even thrown off a United flight back in 2021 because I wasn't wearing a mask properly.
Those in charge of these studies could learn something from economists, who are always encouraged to do a full cost-benefit analysis before making a policy decision. | | | About Mark Skousen, Ph.D.: Mark Skousen is an investment advisor, professional economist, university professor, author of more than 20 books, and founder of the annual FreedomFest conference.
