They traveled from 5 October to 31 October – 26 days in total... Why did they hit the road for 300 miles? Because they were desperate. Desperate to protest against the unemployment and poverty their region suffered. You see, in the 1930s, Britain was hit by the Great Depression. And some areas, like the shipyard town of Jarrow, were hit harder than others. For instance, Jarrow had the highest rate of infant mortality at the time. But why am I bringing up an event that took place 85 years ago? It's not because I want to talk about history… It's because I see a disturbing similarity to today… According to Bloomberg 700,000 jobs were lost to the pandemic. And Bank of England predicts 7.5% unemployment this winter. People are getting desperate.
