Greetings Everyday Spy, Outside the espionage world looking in, there are a handful of spy terms that are easy to confuse.
I recently saw that confusion pop-up in a #SpyTribe discussion about the terms 'surveillance detection' and 'evasion.'
When one person misunderstands something or asks a question, it's a safe bet that others also want clarification. So here is a quick primer to keep you from getting the two confused!
Surveillance detection is like going to a party in highschool - you try to blend in and look cool, but the whole time you are hyper-alert to anyone looking at you!
The goal of surveillance detection is in the name; you want to 'detect' if any 'surveillance' is following you. But there is an important element missing from the title… you want to 'detect' the 'surveillance' without them realizing you've seen them.
This is a massively important piece of the surveillance detection puzzle!
You never want to get caught being 'surveillance aware' because as soon as you show you are trained, the teams following you will get bigger and better until they are too big (or too good) for you to catch.
For example, you'll never 'catch' a drone flying 5,000 ft up with a dedicated camera tracking you.
Evasion is more like sneaking out of the house so you can go to that awesome (and socially stressful) party in highschool.
Evasion has nothing to do with acting cool or trying to fit in - it has everything to do with stealth, silence, and leaving no trace about where you've gone or where you are going. People are looking for you, and you are trying not to get caught.
The base assumption with evasion is that you are being pursued. If you aren't being chased, then you aren't really evading... you are just traveling uncomfortably and inefficiently.
It's normal for a covert field op to include surveillance detection; but something has gone very wrong if the op includes evasion!
Both sets of skills are important, useful, and a total blast to learn and use in real-life. But they are not equal in terms of being 'tradecraft.'
True spy tradecraft must be clandestine.
It has to be secret, undetected, and under full intel officer control. Surveillance detection meets those criteria.
Evasion does not.
Which is why overt military combat units learn evasion, but not surveillance detection.
Infantry movements are anything but secret and undetected. But when things go off the rails in a fire fight, troops need to know how to evade capture and get to an evac point.
EverydaySpy is here to give you pro intel and tradecraft skills you can use to build a better, safer, wealthier life!
It's awesome watching the knowledge spread and seeing the skills work.
And when you are ready to put your skills to the test like never before, I'm here to push your limits... Godspeed, #EverydaySpy Follow @EverydaySpy on Social Media!
