Greetings Everyday Spy, I go through cycles of fitness… maybe you know that feeling?
Between family, career, and general life, I sometimes skip one-too-many workouts and wake up with a little extra weight gain and feeling crappy.
My fitness life seems to almost exactly mirror the seasons on a calendar: 8 good weeks, 4 bad weeks, wake-up feeling gross, get back on the workout-wagon, then do it all over again.
CIA showed me that your body naturally follows a seasonal pattern of exercise.
It craves fresh, cool air in the Fall. It wants heavy muscle-building in the cold of winter. It seeks ways to stretch tight muscles in the warmth of spring. And it wants to relax and stay cool in the heat of summer.
The pattern has held true for me and Jihi in sweltering Asian summers, cold European winters, and wet South American springs.
I keep my physical fitness with a mix of indoor and outdoor workouts. The core of my weekly training includes running, plyometrics, and maintaining my Spy Escape Workout. If you want to learn more about my personal escape workout, you can find it on my EverydaySpy YouTube channel or with a simple Google search.
When field operators serve in locations at-risk for disease and infection, we use the great outdoors as an ally against illness.
Mother nature offers some surprising advantages in the fight against pathogens.
The outdoors brings your body benefits from sunlight to soil and everywhere in between.
Sunlight is the single best source of Vitamin D on earth. Vitamin D is a critical part of immunity response and maintenance and becomes increasingly powerful when paired with Vitamin C and Zinc.
An outdoor workout also nets you the benefits of an invisible immunity booster produced by plant life.
The trees and vegetation around your neighborhood, local parks, and even your own backyard release an organic compound known as phytoncides. These natural antifungal, antibacterial agents also serve to boost the human immune system.
When we breathe them in, they activate a type of white blood cell called the 'natural killer cell.' True to their name, the 'natural killer cell' is the strongest and most aggressive type of white blood cell in your immune system.
If you are looking for a way to kick-start your outdoor workout, here is a video of my own personal kick-start routine!
I have used this routine for years. It works great whether you are getting back on the workout wagon, bouncing back from illness, or just looking to change up your current workout routine.
It is also fully scalable to your fitness level, so you can add or take away from it as you see fit to get the heart pumping and the sweat started each day.
