Greetings Everyday Spy, We have a concept in field operations called 'Operational Security" - OPSEC.
OPSEC is a broad term that applies to many types of security: physical, digital, hardware, personnel, etc. My first introduction to OPSEC was focused on physical security. More specifically, protecting myself.
When you deploy to a foreign location, you are at a massive disadvantage.
You don't know the area, the culture, or have a strong command of the language. But even more dangerous, you don't know the patterns:
Until you understand the 'baseline' patterns in your operational area, your OPSEC is at its lowest.
There is an example we often reference about the 1998 US embassy bombing in Nairobi. On the same day, at nearly the same time, a second US embassy was bombed in Tanzania. The two coordinated truck bombings killed more than 200 people between both locations.
Individuals on the ground in Nairobi at the time consistently note that on that August 7th morning, "something was different." Those who were new to the city were unable to explain the difference, and ultimately went on with their usual routine of work or school. But those who knew the area - the patterns - knew immediately that something big was going to happen and stayed home.
Those who understood the baseline were able to tune-in to small variations/breaks in the pattern.
And important information always hides in those variations. Some expected a riot, others an attack, even more anticipated some kind of government action. But in the end, they were all safer than those that didn't understand the baseline.
To give you the opportunity to practice baseline, check out this YouTube IMINT challenge I made for you.
Your tasks are simple:
