The Great Divide: What I saw in the back roads of America

Dear Reader, Last year, a dream of mine... 17 years in the making... came true... 17 years ago... in 2002... I was working at Citigroup, in a high-rise office building made of polished steel and glass in London's Canary Wharf, working for a bond trading desk... (It was the repo desk...) Whenever my boss turned his back, I'd shut down my spreadsheets, turn on the internet and start reading Bill's daily journal, The Daily Reckoning, which I really loved... Not the boring spreadsheets I was working on for Citigroup, but stories of frauds and fortunes... and great characters... and market crashes... and gold... And, of course, Bill, weaved it all together so beautifully... It was the real "finance" I wanted to be part of... I was utterly captivated... "I'll quit my job at Citigroup and I'll come and work for you for free," I wrote to Bill one day... I didn't know it at the time, but that email was the beginning of a long and exciting journey for me into the world of newsletters, writing, and independent investment research... (I've tried to recount some of the best stories in these Postcards... Hopefully I've done them justice...)  But, funnily enough, that email never did get me a job with Bill...  Until last year, that is, when... having emerged from depression and having come from a very dark place personally, and now traveling around the world with Kate... I met with Bill and Dan in London, one warm day in May... (We'd been in India, but we'd flown back to London in an emergency to be with my mother, who had suddenly been taken very ill...) That day, Bill and Dan invited me to begin contributing to their newsletter and explain the big Dow/Gold trade I'd just put on with my entire life savings to their readers... It was also the day I started writing these Postcards...  It's been another long and unexpected journey from that day, too... I've traveled around the world with my family... visiting 30 countries... and I've traveled all over America, living in a tent and traveling by back road... all during a viral pandemic... and a big bull move in the gold market... Whew... Anyway, Bill, Dan, and I are now working together full time, and I've just produced my first full-length research report for them...
