Nick O'Connor | 1 June 2020 Asteroid carries enough gold to make every human a billionaire  Dear Reader,   NASA has hired Elon Musk to explore a nearby asteroid that contains enough gold to make everyone on Earth a billionaire.   The asteroid, called Psyche 16, is 120 miles wide and has iron, nickel, and gold deposits worth an astonishing £8,000-quadrillion (that's an eight followed by 18 zeroes).   Can you imagine if even a portion of this were brought to Earth?   You can understand now why two space mining companies, Deep Space Industries and Planetary Resources, have had their eyes on asteroids for some time.   Of course, this asteroid would cause gold prices here on Earth to collapse.   Thankfully for gold investors, that’s many years away, if it happens at all.   The probe Elon plans to launch would only leave Earth in 2022, and hopefully reach Psyche and its £8,000-quadrillion trove by 2026.   And after that, there’s no telling how long any extraction process would take.   But it’s amazing to ponder…   Some of the best gold mining companies only average around 4 million ounces a year.    One of the very best just mined more than 6 million ounces in 2019, on the heels of a staggering $10 billion acquisition last year.   Now, I can’t say what gold mining companies will do in 2050 or so, if and when quadrillions’ worth of gold is brought to Earth from asteroids.   But until then – I know of no better way to potentially make a fortune from rising gold prices.
