Dalbar, an independent financial expert at evaluating, auditing, and rating business practices, comes out with a fascinating study every year (probably more frequently). It has to do with average retailer investor performance against broader indexes. And last year's number played out exactly as the situation's been for some time.

In 2018, the company found that "poor timing caused a loss of 9.42% on the year compared to an S&P 500 index that retreated only 4.68%." That means investors lost twice as much money investing themselves than in the broader S&P.

But that's also not an argument to invest in an index ETF. Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), for example, gained 26.32% and 18.17%, respectively, over the same period. The bigger gains are there - but that's only if you know where to look. That brings me to today's topic, the Money Morning VQScore.
