Apparently last summer, Northern Virginia electrical network operators narrowly avoided a widespread power outage when 60 data centers dropped off the public power grid. Had quick action not been taken, the sudden 1,500 megawatt overload would have shut down much of the region — which is home to some of our most sensitive and important national defense assets including but not limited to the Pentagon, the National Reconnaissance Office and CIA headquarters.  Of course, the nerve centers of our intelligence and national defense networks have ample power from their own dedicated sources, but the pandemonium resulting from a sudden and widespread power loss across one of the busiest regions in the country could have easily caused similar disruption. >>> Read the full article here.
