Oil prices spiked near $120 a barrel overnight Sunday before pulling back Monday, closing around $95 for U.S. crude and just under $99 for the global benchmark, as the Iran war, now in its 11th day, continues to choke traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, where roughly 20% of the world's oil supply passes. It was the first time crude topped $100 since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Gas prices at home surged 16% in a single week, with the national average hitting $3.48 a gallon. Speaking to House Republicans in Miami Monday evening, President Trump called the Iranian conflict an "excursion" that would be over "very soon," calling the oil spike a "very small price to pay" for peace. The president said Iranian missile launches are down 90% and drone launches have dropped 83%, and warned Tehran against further choking global supplies, threatening to hit Iran's electricity grid and other "easy" targets. Watch the address here. | Trump Offers Asylum to Iranian Soccer Players President Trump offered asylum Monday to members of Iran's women's national soccer team after players were seen flashing distress signals from their team bus at the Asian Cup in Australia, warning they would "most likely be killed" if sent back. "The U.S. will take them if you won't," he wrote to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. (See the Truth Social post here.) Five players had already escaped their team hotel and were taken to a safe house by Australian police. Trump later said Albanese "is on it." The team arrived in Australia in late February. Days later, the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran, stranding the players in a country now at war. Before their March 2 opener, they stood silent during Iran's national anthem. State TV back home branded them traitors. In later matches, they sang and saluted, raising fears they'd been coerced by regime minders.
