Government Shuts Down Tomorrow Night |

Absent a congressional accord to extend funding provisions… the federal government will partially shutter on Wednesday, Oct. 1. |
Online betting forum Polymarket presently gives 60% odds that the partial shuttering will transpire. |
Similar betting forum Kalshi gives 58% odds that the partial shuttering will transpire. |
At issue is a "continuing resolution" that would keep Uncle Samuel up and going until Nov. 21. |
Both Republican and Democratic factions are locked in fevered negotiation. |
It All Comes Down to Partisan Politics |

Trump Plans to Actually Fire Federal Workers |
Government "shutdowns" — the quotation marks are necessary — in essence constitute paid vacations for furloughed federal employees. |
These employees receive, invariably, backdated compensation for their time spent upon the couch, looking at the television. |
Yet under the administration's proposal, many will not return to their posts. They will instead be handed pink-colored paper slips. |

The White House budget office is telling federal agencies to prepare plans for mass firings in the event of a government shutdown — an apparent threat by the Trump administration amid a standoff with congressional Democrats over federal funding. |

The directive, outlined in an Office of Management and Budget memo to agencies… represents a sharp break from the government's handling of past shutdown scenarios. |
|
|
In the memo, OMB directs agencies to identify programs whose funds will lapse if Congress fails to meet the September 30 funding deadline and that have no alternative source of funding. |
|
|
Those programs should then be targeted for sweeping reductions in force that could permanently eliminate jobs that are deemed "not consistent" with President Donald Trump's priorities. |

Sorry, But They Need to Go |
Despite all outward appearance — and I do mean all outward appearance — I harbor a soul. The milk of human compassion courses through me. |
Thus I am in deep and sincere sympathy with federal employees who may be thrown into unemployment. |
Many head families. And a family should have a head. |
Yet I do not exaggerate when I argue that the heaping majority serves little to no productive purpose. |
Their function is extractive. It is not productive. |
I argue they should be directed towards productive employment within the private sector… where possible. |
Yet to what effect? |
It Probably Won't Stand |
I hazard the administration's mass axings will be challenged in federal court — and successfully challenged in federal court. |
The calamity-howlers within government will argue that a shutdown will invite Chaos and Old Night. |
Horror upon horror will ensue, they shriek. |
Its terrors would fan in ever-expanding circles. It will lay economic waste to all who fall within them. |
Will it? As I have argued before: |
Elected officials fear government shutdown not because it injures the American people — but precisely because it does not injure the American people. |
In event of shutdown, the American people would begin to raise… questions. |
Why Do We Need These Useless Programs? |
"The National Endowment for the Arts has been shuttered for three months? I haven't noticed. Why do we have one again?" |
"The Peace Corps is idle? The world isn't very peaceful these days. It's clearly failed at its mission. Maybe it's time to end it." |
"The Office of Government Ethics? Is that some kind of joke? Might as well have an Office of Circular Squares. Why are we paying for this nonsense?" |
Even Wasteful Spending Creates Demand |
Drummers for wasteful government argue wasteful spending is not truly wasteful. |
They say government spends money that stimulates the broader economy. |
That government spending, therefore, creates "demand." |
Thus the "wasteful" spending to which you may object represents an economic stimulant. |
If government did not spend that money, they argue, the gross economic product would endure a contraction — and perhaps a severe one. |
Yet I am fond to cite this one example… |
Does This Make Sense? |
Assume the United States government pays a fellow to shovel a hole. Assume further that it pays the same fellow to shovel that hole back in. |
In the official telling, you have just witnessed an expansion of the gross domestic product. |
Have you? Or have you merely witnessed a reduction of the gross domestic product? |
I maintain that you have merely witnessed a reduction of the gross domestic product. |
The gross domestic product has expanded, it is true, officially. |
Yet nothing got done. Not one thing. |
I maintain — with adamance — that vast amount of government enterprise sorts into this category. |
Thus I am heart and soul for a partial government shuttering come Wednesday. |
Yes… that shuttering may be limited. Very little may come from it. |
Yet do not forget: |
