WEEKLY UPDATE Dear Leah, Take a look at your driveway. If you’re in the United States, there’s a 98.9% chance you’ll see a gas-powered vehicle, not a battery-powered one. (In the most likely case, it will either be a four-cylinder SUV or six-cylinder pickup.) And even if you happen to be in the electric vehicle-friendly state of California, that figure is still as high as 92%. In fact, 93.2% of cars sold in the U.S. so far this year have been gas powered, according to Bank of America estimates – up from 92.5% last year. This is because current EV models are either expensive, unexciting, or both. Meanwhile, China is a different story. Consumers in China have a lot of “good-enough” EV options, and a lot of cheap ones for that matter. This disparity in EV offerings highlights the growing geopolitical divide between China and the rest of the world, which Thomas Yeung will talk further in today’s Fry’s Investment Report weekly update.
