Perfect Aim With Human Instinct

Greetings Everyday Spy, Human instinct goes much further than basic survival and self-preservation.   It is an active force of massive power.   A while back I had a private contract with my former Marine Raider buddy Raul and two private ultra-rich clients exercising small weapons skills.   The clients had mixed backgrounds with weapons, but it didn't matter. Professional shooters always start every day at the range with the same basics:   Weapon safety Dry fire drills Firing from fixed position Firing under movement   It was clear that the client had never experienced a true professional shooter experience…   Despite dozens of instructors, visits to top-rated indoor and outdoor ranges, and thousands of rounds fired.   By the end of the weapons safety portion of the day, they were floored.    Operational combat shooting is nothing like law enforcement, competitive, or civilian shooting.    The basics of a weapon are the same, the rules to keep yourself and others safe are the same, but the use and purpose of the weapon are totally different.   Because in combat, your weapon is the only thing standing between you and death.   Every round counts. Every step counts. Every aim has to be true.    Not because you are trying to hit the inner ring or score the most points, but because you are shooting at a human threat that needs to be put down.   Pro shooters rely on instinct when they aim their weapon - a term called 'instinctive aim.'   Here's how it works:   Find an object on the opposite side of the room from where you are sitting right now. It can be any object, small or large, close or far. Look at the object with both eyes and take a moment to focus on it. Once you are focused, keep looking at the object and then quickly raise your fully extended arm and point at the object with your thumb Now check how accurate your thumb is by moving your head and eyes to see if your thumb is correctly aimed at the object.   There is greater than a 90% chance that your thumb aimed true to the object you were focused on… and it took you less than one second to secure that true aim.   If you had a handgun, rifle, or assault rifle in your grip with your non-dominant thumb running parallel with the barrel, your round would follow the direction of your thumb.   That is instinctive aim -- the power of your human instinct to kill rather than be killed.
