41% Stock Price Pop for Furniture Store: Follow the Herd or Follow the Data?
When analysts start calling for a bottom in a stock price, are they jumping the gun before the facts are known, or are they ahead of the curve, having accurately read the tea leaves?
That's what Landon addressed in a recent appearance on T.D. Ameritrade's Fast Market.
The stock price for a popular online furniture company spiked 41% from the opening bell on Jan. 20 to the closing bell on Jan. 23 as it announced plans to reduce around 10% of its staff. The company already let go of 870 employees in August 2022, so with both job cuts, it may be a sign to Wall Street that the management team is serious about controlling expenses.
The move prompted one J.P. Morgan analyst to bestow a “double upgrade,” upgrading the underlying stock from "neutral" to “buy.” Analysts from Wedbush even upgraded its rating from “neutral” to “outperform.”
Given LikeFolio's history with this company — having accurately called the bottom in March 2020, subsequently tracking the stock to triple-digit gains of 549% in just three months — everyone was interested to hear Landon's thoughts.
But the difference between 2020 and now, Landon said, was that a huge number of folks were moving, performing home improvements, or just sick of looking at the same wall, so they wanted to change things. During that time, there was a tremendous spike in Purchase Intent that benefited the company — in other words, there was an uptick in consumers talking about spending money with this company, which LikeFolio is able to measure in real-time.
No escaping it, 2022 was brutal. But what if you could make back every penny you've lost in the market last year? That's what I want to show you how to do here. Thanks to a new strategy, you could reverse the tide and turn all of 2023 into the opportunity of a lifetime. We know it sounds too good to be true. But that's why we're showing you how it works in this quick demo. Click here now to watch.
When pressed by the show hosts on the disconnect between what LikeFolio sees compared to the analysts, Landon acknowledged there's been a little bit of an uptick with Purchase Intent, and website visits are slightly up — but those metrics are still down over the past year.
Thing is, page views and website visits correlate closely with sales, and they're “barely” up. And Happiness Mentions — LikeFolio's way of measuring consumer sentiment based on what folks are actually saying on social media — continue to head lower for the company, coming in around 57%.
By comparison, the rate of Happiness Mentions for the Scandinavian chain IKEA sits around 72%.
So, instead of following the investing herd into this company, Landon will show you how LikeFolio's proprietary data can help you make better decisions.
