Wall Street Panicked Over This Chart

Dear Smart Investor,

On June 14, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported only 8,010 new COVID-19 cases in the U.S.

It was the lowest number of new cases since March 19, 2020 — back when the pandemic was just getting started.

The S&P 500 Index made an all-time high on June 14 as investors grew more optimistic about the economic recovery.

But then, the highly contagious delta variant of COVID-19 began to spread faster.

The number of new cases soared to nearly 40,000 a day by July 16. That’s a 400% increase in a little more than a month.

Uncertainty about the delta variant in the U.S. and elsewhere led to a wave of selling when the markets opened on Monday.

The S&P 500 dropped 1.6% in its worst day since May 12.

The stock market rebounded over the next several days as some of the initial pessimism subsided.

But keep in mind that more than half of the U.S. population still isn’t fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.

So, it’s impossible to tell just how widespread the latest COVID-19 outbreak will be in the months ahead.
