Because when it came to the safety of his soldiers, he'd "go through hell with a gasoline can" to protect them. Allen West is a former lieutenant colonel and U.S. combat veteran. His father was part of the Greatest Generation that went through hell and back to secure our freedoms during World War II. After graduating from the University of Tennessee, Allen followed in his footsteps and became the third of four generations of servicemen in his family. He retired from the Army in 2004 with several honors, including a Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal. And in 2010, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives — representing Florida's 22nd District. Today, he serves as the chairman of the Republican Party of Texas and speaks at universities across the country. His most recent book, We Can Overcome: An American Black Conservative Manifesto, urges Black Americans to embrace the conservative principles that once helped them thrive.
