Albemarle announced plans to double lithium production from the Silver Peak mine in Nevada by 2025. The company said it’s responding to U.S. electric vehicle makers looking for “greater security” in their supply chains. ➤ A mining billionaire launched a SPAC for clean energy. Robert Friedland will raise $200 million for blank-check firm Ivanhoe Capital Acquisition Corp., according to regulatory filings. Friedland is known for developing the major Voisey’s Bay nickel mine in Canada, and the Kamoa-Kakula copper mine in Africa. The SPAC said it will target acquisitions related to the “paradigm shift” away from fossil fuels. ➤ Indonesia became a battery metals superpower. Battery giant LG struck a blockbuster $9.8 billion deal to invest in Indonesian electric vehicle manufacturing. Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of nickel, a key battery metal. ➤ A major nickel mine in Indonesia stalled. As reported by Reuters, China’s GEM Co. delayed start-up of a new Indonesian nickel mine, due to COVID-19. The mine on the island of Sulawesi had been planned for 2019, but now won’t come online until 2022. Nickel prices rose as much as 5% on the news. ➤ A former Congress leader joined the junior gold sector. Canadian-listed Bullfrog Gold announced that John Boehner is joining its board of directors. Boehner was Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2011-2015, and a former House Majority Leader. Bullfrog Gold is developing a new mine in southwest Nevada.
