Congress prepped a bill banning mining near a wilderness area in the state’s northeast. The move – seen as an indicator for Biden’s stance on mining – would shut down the proposed Twin Metals project. ➤ Celebrities are financing battery metals mines. R&B singer Akon signed a deal for a copper-cobalt operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Reuters reported. The deal was done through a U.S. private equity fund, which will partner with DR Congo’s state mining firm. ➤ The world's largest uranium mining nation slashed production. Kazakhstan cut output of the nuclear fuel by 15% in 2020, its energy minister said in a statement. Kazakhstan is the world’s largest producer of uranium, but it recently vowed to cut supply in the face of currently low prices. ➤ China's hoarding drove cobalt to new highs. Prices for the battery metal have already jumped 13% in 2021. Traders said Chinese government buying for strategic stockpiles is the big reason. ➤ Norway wants to swap offshore oil for offshore metals. As reported by Reuters, the Norwegian oil ministry said it’s preparing to offer licenses for deep-sea mining of battery metals, including copper and cobalt.
