The U.S.’s lack of critical metals is a threat to security, he wrote in an Executive Order. The state of emergency requires government agencies to respond within a few months with ideas for funding and permitting new mines of lithium, vanadium, rare earths, and other metals. ➤ Tesla finally did a lithium mining deal. In a much-anticipated move, North Carolina miner Piedmont Lithium said it’s signed a five-year agreement to sell Tesla the key battery metal. Piedmont’s share price exploded 391% on the news. ➤ Major investors backed a lithium battery company. Swedish battery-maker Northvolt grabbed $600 million in funding to advance its manufacturing. Investors included Volkswagen, Goldman Sachs, and the founder of Spotify, Daniel Ek. ➤ Brazil is making nuclear fertilizer. The government of Ceará state signed a deal for a plant to extract uranium from phosphate, traditionally used to make crop nutrients. Similar facilities in Florida produced uranium in the past. ➤ JPMorgan Chase paid for manipulating the silver market. The investment bank agreed to a $920 million settlement for “spoofing” metals and other investments, according to CNBC.
