Tony Blair on 5G: "We have to be with the US"

Nick O'Connor | 11 July 2020 Tony Blair warns about 5G Dear Reader,   The world hasn’t seen such a fierce technology race since World War II.   While thousands of scientists work towards a coronavirus vaccine with Project Manhattan-like urgency, our politicians seem more focused on a contest that doesn’t involve weapons – at least of the traditional kind.   This week alone, Singapore rejected Chinese telecom giant Huawei’s bid to implement 5G infrastructure there, soon after the U.K. revisited its decision to allow Huawei to set up shop in Britain.   U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo celebrated it as a win for security, saying the tide in the global 5G struggle was turning.   As reported in the Nikkei Asian Review, he touted Sweden, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Greece as among the nations turning only to “trusted vendors” and not China to build their 5G infrastructure.   Even Tony Blair chimed in this week, saying at the end of the day, “It is very hard for us not to be with the US on anything that touches US security.”   The global tension over 5G is more proof it’s not just a revolutionary technology like the internet – it has the ability to affect the global balance of power.   Which country will win out? We’ll see over time if the tide really turned this week, as Secretary Pompeo claimed....   But the business leader that wins out in the 5G revolution is an entirely different question.   And there’s ONE company whose software platform is cementing itself as the lynchpin of the new internet.   It has already inked deals with heavy hitters like:   Microsoft Hewlett Packard   Walmart   Lockheed Martin ​ IBM   And many more.   In a nutshell, this company could see an advance similar to that of Microsoft in the first internet boom.
