Dear 10-Minute Millionaire Reader,
My wife and I have been empty nesters for the last couple of years. We love the freedom and have the extra blessing that both of our children live within an hour drive.
As they were growing up, I had to learn the finer points of parenting, like countless people all over the world. One of the main lessons that I learned early on was that I had to be judicious about when I jumped in for real hard-core parenting.
After the kids were in middle school and above, there were still many teachable moments. But if I jumped in and tried to mentor/teach/parent every single time a teachable moment came around, my kids would become numb to the advice.
So I learned to "pick my spots" - to only step in at the really important moments. And over time, I really could see that this restraint was making an impact. When I did make a suggestion or step in during a dicey situation, it made an impression.
Compare that to the exasperated mom or dad in the grocery who keeps telling their child to stop touching this, to stop running, to put that back on the shelf... and the kid never listens to any of the non-stop demands.
I find the same scenario plays out in the market. Many traders and investors, especially newer ones, like every opportunity they see. A main motivator at the early stages of trading and investing is the "fear of missing out" or FOMO.
But more experienced traders and investors know that one of the most important of aspects of trading, much like parenting, is finding a well-defined way of "picking your spot".
