 Greetings Everyday Spy, In an open resignation letter that made headlines worldwide, former MSNBC producer Ariana Pekary confirmed that you can't trust the news to tell you the truth anymore.
Speaking about the current news model, Pekary told the world,
"The model blocks diversity of thought and content because the networks have incentive to amplify fringe voices and events, at the expense of others… all because it pumps up the ratings."
She explained how the desire for higher ratings (and higher annual bonuses!) drives news editors to ignore true journalism in pursuit of popular opinion.
"... nearly every rundown at the network basically is the same, hour after hour… I've even heard producers deny their role as journalists. A very capable senior producer once said: 'Our viewers don't really consider us the news. They come to us for comfort.'"
And she is not the only media professional confirming that mainstream news is broken.
Bari Weiss, an editor for the New York Times who also resigned, explained how news is not giving Americans facts anymore.
"Stories are chosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences, rather than to allow a curious public to read about the world and then draw their own conclusions. I was always taught that journalists were charged with writing the first rough draft of history… Now, history itself is one more ephemeral thing molded to fit the needs of a predetermined narrative."
Even while these two respected professionals explain how the news has become a 'cancer' and a threat to our very democracy, they remain hopeful.
Ariana Pekary admitted,
"There is a better way to do this. I'm not so cynical to think that we are absolutely doomed (though we are on that path). I know we can find a cure."
