Everything’s going great ... until you realize the next charging station is 50 miles away, and your battery is already low. You try to make it in time, but your car runs out of juice. You have to pay a hefty towing price, on top of also paying for the charge. This unfortunate scenario is one reason many Americans have held off on buying an EV. But soon, that will be a problem of the past. Recent market changes will make charging stations more efficient and widespread. As the chart below shows, the U.S. EV charger market size was around $2 billion at the end of 2020, according to Grand View Research. But by 2028, the charger market is expected to grow to $28.4 billion. That’s a compound annual growth rate of 38.9%. The Combined Charging System (CCS) standard was created in 2011. It offers up to 350 kWh of power, which is enough to charge most EVs from zero to 80% in less than an hour. But over the next several years, the new CHAdeMO 3.0 standard will become the fastest-growing charger market in the U.S. Developed by the Chinese and Japanese auto industries, CHAdeMO will provide up to 900 kWh of power. That much power would let you charge a 2021 Tesla Model 3 from zero to 100% in about five minutes! And part of President Joe Biden’s infrastructure plan is to build 400,000 charging stations around the country. According to Statista, there are about 100,000 chargers in the U.S. So, Biden’s plan would grow our nation’s charging network by 400%. With easier-to-access stations that charge your EV at lightning-fast speeds, the EV market is sure to catapult within this decade.
