My most embarrassing moment?

I felt like my face was scarlet
Hey There,

So I have to confess one of my most embarrassing moments as a newbie trader.

Someone once asked me what my favorite "chip" stock was.

And remember, I was a brand new, just-standing-up-on-her-legs for the first time sort of trader, and I gave the first answer I could think of…

"Frito Lay?"

It was not a good look.

But the reality is, you don't know what you don't know!

And semiconductor chips, the kind of stock they meant by "chip stock," weren't as universally known then as they are now!

Now, of course, there's a massive shortage of these chips around the world.

But today, I read an interesting article about what might happen next in that industry…

His Mom's Personal Piggy Bank
How did Jeffry Turnmire become his mom's personal piggy bank?

Nowadays, when Jeffry's mom takes $10,000 out of his account, it amounts to less than a 10th of a percent of what they have available.

But it wasn't always that way.

So if you aren't aware (and believe me, I can't judge you!) semiconductors are crucially important electricity conductors that are a component in almost everything these days.

From cars, to computers, to cell phones, to video game consoles…

Chances are if it uses a high level of electricity, it requires a semiconductor.

There are just two big problems with that model:

  1. Most of the materials we need to make semiconductors come from overseas, especially in and around China
  2. There is a massive shortage of semiconductors right now, thanks to the pandemic and tense relations between the U.S. and China

This is the reason you might have struggled to get something this year, whether it be a new laptop for work, a brand new car, or a Playstation 5 for your kiddos.

But according to this article, we're entering a new phase in the shortage, that comes with good news and bad news.

The good news is that the shortage could be letting up soon for automakers.

That could be a breath of life for stocks like Ford (F) that have been in a steady downtrend for the last six weeks or so.

The tradeoff is, smartphone production, which has been largely unaffected so far, could start to take the brunt of the heat of this crisis.

So that could affect the next iPhone launch in a pretty serious way if it's not corrected.

And bears right now think the shortage could last all the way into 2023.

We'll have to see. But it will almost certainly affect the holiday season this year, so if you're planning on big gifts to surprise the little ones, plan ahead!
