The S&P 500 crept up throughout the day to close with a gain near 0.50% as traders and investors continue to bet on an economic stimulus bill. As yet, there has been no movement on the bill but reports from Washington continue to stimulate hope. With the holidays fast approaching and lawmakers headed home for the session break a deal may be elusive until early January. In other news, the economic data continues to come in mixed. On the one hand, the number of jobless claims edged higher over the last week as the number of COVID cases continues to grow. Conversely, the number of housing starts and building permits accelerated from the previous month and beat their consensus estimates in a show of underlying economic strength.
