How to Skip the Lotto and End Up Rich
By Ethan Goldman, junior analyst, Chaikin Analytics
Everyone knows that your odds of winning the top prize for any lottery are improbable...
A single Powerball ticket has a 1 in about 292 million chance of claiming the jackpot. That's a staggering figure.
Heck, you're more likely to die from a vending-machine accident than win that top Powerball prize.
Yet people keep buying lottery tickets with dreams of winning it all.
I live in Florida, where the average resident spends $403 on lottery tickets a year. On average, my fellow Floridians win $286 per year on those tickets. And they lose $117 per year on those tickets.
The Powerball pays out prizes as small as $4. And for some folks, that chance of a smaller win keeps them hooked.
Even a "small" prize of less than $1 million could change someone's life trajectory.
Of course, there are better ways to actually grow your money than betting on the Powerball.
As a Chaikin PowerFeed reader, you obviously know the power of investing. And one of the most basic investments out there has a "secret" to it for generating big gains over time...
You've been living with it so long that you may no longer notice. The smaller packages... the smaller airplane seats... the little surcharges, fees, and screens asking you to tip – it's all part of something much larger: the Great Devaluation of America. And it goes way beyond tips. It's coming for every promise that has ever been made about your security... your retirement... and the U.S. dollar itself. You must take these steps to prepare now.

Recently, Litman went public with details on a radical investing approach he has only shared with very few. Incredibly, it requires just three stocks and has helped his own mother earn 3,400% gains over the years. Click here to see the full story.
The 'Magic' of Compounding Returns
Florida is home to nearly 24 million people, including myself. Imagine that any three of those folks had an extra $403 – the average amount that residents spend on lottery tickets in the state – to spend every year.
How would they use it over a decade?
Let's say the first person puts it all in a pillowcase and lets it sit for a rainy day. The second person buys lottery tickets. The third invests in the broad market.
You can probably guess who will have the most money in a decade...
After 10 years, the person with the pillowcase would have $4,030. The second person had average luck in the lottery and now has $2,860.
But the third person would end up with about $5,958 after 10 years. That's about $1,900 more than the person with the pillowcase and nearly twice as much as the lottery player.
Person No. 3 used common sense and invested in the S&P 500 Index.
Historically, the broad market's average return is about 10% per year. Adjusted for inflation, that figure historically is closer to 7%. So starting with zero dollars, the third person in our example simply invested their $403 each year for 10 years in the S&P 500 with an average annual rate of 7%.
And this 7% annual return is compounding. That doesn't sound like much. But as you know, the numbers keep getting bigger as time increases...
After 30 years of this strategy, the investor in our example would have about $40,732. And that's just with a mere $403 per year.
This is the "magic" of compounding. Market giants like Warren Buffett swear by it. Even physicist Albert Einstein once said...
Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it... he who doesn't... pays it.
So, next time you get gas you find yourself looking at lottery tickets...
Stop yourself and think about compounding interest. Imagine that money in a fund pegged to the S&P 500... or even better, in winning recommendations from the Power Gauge.
Sure, it can be fun to make some bets on the lottery every now and then...
But the growth from directing lottery ticket funds into the market speaks for itself. And it doesn't take luck.
Good investing,
