1976: NASA's crewless spacecraft Viking 2 landed on Mars. Viking 2 operated on the surface of Mars for 1,316 days until its battery failed on April 11, 1980. The spacecraft, and its twin, Viking 1, accounted for the first close-up and color photos of the red planet's surface.
