Who is this cartel? It has two members. Visa and Mastercard. |
And they are getting away with the biggest, most brazen heist in American history. |
It's called the "swipe fee." And it's a cancer on our economy. |
Every time you use your credit card, the small business owner on the other side of the counter gets hit with a fee. A tax. |
A tribute to the cartel. It's usually 2% to 4% of the total sale. That may not sound like much. But it adds up. |
Last year, these fees totaled $187.2 billion. That's more than most small businesses make in profit. |
For many, it's their biggest expense after labor. |
Think about that. A small business owner takes all the risk. |
They mortgage their house. They work 80 hours a week. They create jobs. They build a community. |
And for their trouble, they have to hand over a huge chunk of their revenue to a couple of giant, faceless corporations that did nothing but process a transaction. |
It's a scam. It's a shakedown. And it's killing Main Street. |

A Rigged Game |
My rich dad taught me that business is a game. But he also taught me that to win, you have to know the rules. |
And you have to know when the game is rigged. |
This game is rigged. |
Small business owners have to compete. They have to fight for every customer. They have to offer better products, better service, better prices. |
If they don't, they die. That's the free market. That's capitalism. |
But Visa and Mastercard? They don't have to compete. |
They are a duopoly. A cartel. They set the fees. And if you're a small business owner, you have two choices: pay up or stop accepting credit cards. |
In today's world, that's not a choice. It's a death sentence. |
So they pay. They pay the tribute. And who do you think ultimately pays for that? You do. The customer. |
The fees are baked into the price of everything you buy. You are paying the cartel tax every time you swipe your card. |
It's a perfect system. For the cartel. They take no risk. They produce nothing. They simply sit at the tollbooth and collect their tribute from every transaction in the economy. |
And the system is designed to punish the little guy. Small businesses pay higher rates than big corporations. |
Why? There's no good reason. The cost to process the transaction is the same. |
It's pure price gouging. It's the cartel using its power to crush the competition and reward its friends at the big box stores. |
The Solution |
My poor dad, the academic, would have said we need more regulations. More government. He trusted the system. |
My rich dad would have laughed. He knew the system was the problem. |
He knew the government was in bed with the big banks and the credit card companies. |
But for once, there's a simple, commonsense solution on the table. It's called the Credit Card Competition Act. And even my friend Donald Trump is on board. |
It's not a complicated idea. |
It simply says that small businesses should have a choice. It would require the big banks to allow for more than one network on their cards. |
Instead of just Visa or Mastercard, a small business could choose to route the transaction through a different network. |
A network like Star, or Pulse, or Shazam. |
What would happen then? Competition. The different networks would have to compete for the business. |
They would have to lower their fees. They would have to offer better service. |
The cartel would be broken. The tollbooth would be smashed. |
And the savings? They would go back to the small business owners. |
They could use that money to hire more people. To raise wages. To lower prices. |
The money would flow back to Main Street, where it belongs. Not to Wall Street. |
It's a simple idea. It's a powerful idea. And it's an idea whose time has come. |
Ninety-two percent of small business owners support it. The politicians on both sides of the aisle are starting to listen. |
Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. They are the engine of job growth. |
They are the heart of our communities. |
They are not afraid to compete. |
It's time to make the credit card companies compete, too. |
