This is great for Nvidia.
It’s great for China.
Not so good for our national security, though, is it?
The reason the Trump administration and the Biden administration before them stopped letting Nvidia sell these chips is because if a conflict broke out with China, we would not want to face their most advanced weaponry powered by Nvidia’s best chips, or their second best chips.
We just wouldn’t want to face that, okay?
So both parties, bipartisan, made an agreement we would not let China get their hands on Nvidia and other advanced semiconductors.
We don’t want them to win the AI race against us.
Because we know whoever wins the AI race will become the dominant power for the next hundred years.
So why on earth did the Trump administration allow Nvidia to begin selling its AI chips back to China again?
After so loudly proclaiming they can’t get their hands on them?
Rare earths.
We talked about this a few weeks ago. We started a trade war with China.
See, China wants AI chips.
We need rare earths.
So China had leverage on us.
They negotiated a “trade truce” last month and the Trump administration bragged about getting rare earths, but didn’t really talk about what we had to give up in return.
Well, last week we found out that the Trump administration has to basically arm our #1 geopolitical adversary.
Because without rare earths, we can’t make cars. We can’t make anything. They’re in our F35s, they’re in basically everything.
So we started a trade war misunderstanding which side had the leverage.
You haven’t seen anybody from the Trump administration talk about this.
It’s been reported in the financial press, and certainly Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has talked about it.
He’s very happy doing a victory lap and all this other stuff.
But nobody from the Trump administration wants to touch this because they realize how stupid they look, how bad we look, how awful it is.
Now, as a consolation prize to those of us Americans who realize how much this deal stinks, and how China basically took the gun from us and got back the chips we vowed not to let them have…
The Pentagon went ahead and invested in a rare earth manufacturer in America - MP Materials - with the idea they would become rare earth independent again.
Finally!
Because look - we’re just a couple of folks in Boca Raton, Florida here, and we’ve been talking for years about how critical it is for us to get independent of China for rare earths…
How critical it is for our national security to stop being China-dependent.
Trump was in office from 2016 to 2020.
Biden was in office from 2020 to 2024.
And guess what -
These guys didn’t do anything.
And now, because we need what China has, we just armed our #1 geopolitical adversary.
When I told you in a Diary video last month that I couldn’t feel good about a China deal until I saw what we were giving up, that caused quite a stir with viewers.
And now, here we are - arming China with our second-most advanced Nvidia chips.
Now, the difference between our second-most advanced chips and our most advanced chips is miniscule, I’m told by people who really know.
And China has already proven that with these chips they can do some pretty radical and advanced things.
This will not age well.
I’m glad at least the Trump administration seems to be waking up to the dangers of having your #1 geopolitical adversary have a gun to your head with rare earths.
And that we seem to finally be serious about mining them in America.
You guys know this has been such a bugaboo for me…
This issue just irritates the living bejesus out of me.
Anyway, that’s what I wanted to talk about so we could put a pin in it for a while until there’s some serious movement.
