Before CIA found me, I was just one of many proud US military members planning to leave uniform and start over in the civilian world.
200,000 US military members leave Active Duty each year to enter civilian life. A little less than 25% of them have a civilian job lined up before they leave the military. The other 75% do not.
For me, I did not have a plan for work, but I did have a plan to find a free-spirited hippie chick who wanted to travel Africa with me helping widows and orphans!
The biggest difference between veterans who start civilian careers quickly and those who go unemployed for 3-6 months is their rank.
46% of military officers have a civilian job lined up before they leave service. Only 25% of non-commissioned officers have work lined up. And in the enlisted ranks, only 21% have a civilian career ready.
Without work, 47% of veterans opt to go back to school (using loans or the GI Bill) in the hopes that education will help them find work.
Female veterans struggle more with civilian transition than male veterans.
14% more females opt for school because they cannot find work. 39% say their military service does not make them more competitive against civilian peers. And some even report that social groups look down on them for choosing service over college, marriage, or growing a family.
Having succeeded in the military and civilian world, I hold veterans very close to my heart.
Military vets have a background, experience, and mindset that only 2% of the American public understands (because that 2% are also veterans!).
