 Greetings Everyday Spy, I was invited to guest-lecture at George Washington University in downtown Washington D.C.
The course was called 'US Grand Strategy' -- a topic that is strangely both funny and interesting.
It's funny because you can't help but wonder if the US even has a 'Grand Strategy.' And if it does, isn't it basically, "beat everyone else?"
The topic was interesting because, all joking aside, what is the US Grand Strategy for preserving our nation?
It must be working, because how else could a country that constantly changes its leadership continue being dominant for so long?
CIA and other National Security elements - from the military to the treasury - are subject to a primary set of national objectives.
One of those objectives is 'American Primacy,' a principle that helps all government organizations focus on the importance of keeping America first among nations; the wealthiest economy, the deadliest military, the most stable government, etc.
The United States is still the world's only superpower.
Despite global recessions, deeply divided elections, and even international pandemics, our country is still able to protect individual rights, maintain National Security, and lead the world in wealth and global market power.
That resilience is a hallmark of 'American Primacy' - the commitment we all share to keeping our country first among nations.
Equality and fairness are values we hold as a nation, but they are values we reserve only for our own citizens.
There is no moral, legal, or strategic obligation for us to apply equality or fairness to all nations.
If anything, we see that countries like China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia openly disregard our national values and use them against us diplomatically, economically, and socially.
A big part of securing our nation is recognizing that our nation is a target for others.
Some that are open enemies, and even more that claim to be friends.
Keeping our nation, our values, and our democracy secure is the US Grand Strategy.
