Greetings Everyday Spy, I've made a lot of mistakes on the road to building Everyday Spy.
And I always try to own up to them when they happen.
I had a trusted friend (and genuine analytical genius) write to me because he saw an email I sent to you all owning up to a mistake I thought I made.
I was including a lot of hyperlinks in my emails and I thought maybe people thought it was spammy.
He said:
"Andy - you're a riot. You have secrets you literally could die for, but you felt the need to tell the world about your hyperlink mistake!"
The great secret about trained liars is that, at our core, we all want to be honest.
But lying comes more naturally.
So after telling my buddy that it just 'felt right' to explain my overuse of hyperlinks, he blew my mind with an email idea that I immediately disagreed with...
"People say they want less email, but they actually want more. Data around the world proves me right - double or triple the amount of emails you send and tell me if I'm wrong."
I'm a big fan of failing by falling on my face, so I immediately took him up on his suggestion.
But when I started sending you more emails, you all showed me he was right!
The only thing worse than falling on your face is telling your genius friend they were right...
His data showed me that when we say we want less email, what we mean is we want less SHALLOW email. We want less spam, less junk, and less waste.
But what totally shocked me was discovering that we all want more REAL email. We want more heartfelt emails from family, kind words from friends, and interesting updates from peers.
If you don't like what I'm sending you, feel free to ignore me, delete me, or click unsubscribe.
I promise I won't be offended.
But if you like getting my emails, now you know why.
Because there is nothing EMPTY about what we are building together.
