Dear Reader,
In 1995 the grey wolf was reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park.
It marked a return to the ecosystem for the apex predator, after a 70-year absence.
And it triggered something known as a trophic cascade. An avalanche of change that starts at the top of the food chain and works its way down.
See, in the time since the grey wolf had been killed off, the eco system had become hugely imbalanced.
Elk populations bloated.
The grassy plains had become barren.
And the beaver population fell off a cliff.
But when the grey wolf was reinserted at the apex of the ecosystem something remarkable happened.
Unsurprisingly, the elk population dropped as they were forced to run and hide.
But, in turn, that allowed vegetation and trees to regenerate.
Beavers – who eat the trees – began to multiply.
And the dams that the beavers built provided habitats for other animals like otters and ducks.
The number of mice and rabbits began to rise too. This gave way to more hawks, weasels and foxes.
The ecosystem had entered into balance again.
(Even the rivers began to run straighter because the elk could no longer graze the river banks in fear of being hunted.)
I'm telling you this now because something similar is happening in the markets right now.
The 'Apex Predator' of the markets just woke up. And whilst it could cause carnage in the short term, it could bring balance back to the global monetary system.
It could also create wealth for those on the right side of this change.
One thing is for certain:
Elks should be fearing for their lives…
Whilst beavers should be rubbing hands.
Luckily, you can decide which one you want to be.
