From £70K to unemployed…

Nick Hubble| 28 Aug 2020 You cannot afford to be unprepared  Dear Reader,    When Tim's wife was made redundant from her job at RBS…   He wasn't initially too perturbed.   She had received 1,000 shares as part of her redundancy package.   At the time, they were worth around £20.   And Tim, aged 49, was a senior civil servant.   However, when he too, was made redundant… losing a salary of £70,000-plus a year…   The shares were worthless, wiping out the safety net Tim hoped they'd provide.   Meaning if things didn't improve, he'd have to sell the house…   Which, with the market so depressed, would be a real struggle.   This is a true story which was originally told to and printed in The Guardian FIVE YEARS after the crisis of 2008.   I repeat it here for two very good reasons…   First, it shows what can happen if you are unprepared for the absolute worst case scenario.   And by unprepared, I mean having every last penny tied up in the traditional, buckling financial system at points of intense panic and stress.     Secondly, if you thought the 2008 financial crisis was bad…   It looks like being knocked for six by what's happening now.   In fact, if you listen to what renowned economist David Rosenberg told BNN Bloomberg: COVID-19 looks set to spur a depression '10 times worse' than 2008.   He's not the only one who believes so.   Kenneth Rogoff (the former chief economist of the IMF) sees the 2008 global financial crisis as a mere dry run for today's economic catastrophe...
